New Australian Guidelines Do Not Recommend Daily Sunscreen for Darker Skin Types
Australia has updated its sun safety guidelines to consider both skin cancer risks and the vitamin D benefits of the sun. Here’s a quick summary:
Endorsed by the Australasian College of Dermatologists, the guidelines were revised to account for the fact that people with darker skin are at lower risk for skin cancer and may need more sun exposure for vitamin D☀️
Sunscreen is still recommended daily for most people when the UV index is 3 or above✅
Pale skin and high-risk individuals should strictly protect themselves from the sun, while intermediate skin types (darker white, olive, or light brown skin) can spend some time in the sun for vitamin D benefits🛡️
Routine sun protection is not needed for deeply pigmented brown to black skin unless sun exposure is for extended periods⌛
The guidelines take into account the location, time of day, and skin coverage with an aim to provide more specific advice on sun safety📝
The new guidelines' overall goal is to reduce skin cancer risk📉 while allowing some safe sun exposure⛱️
